At PS/MS 3 in the Bronx, students kicked off their first annual ‘Penny Harvest Show’ while maintaining a spirit of collective action.

Flyers for the first annual ‘PS/MS 3 Penny Harvest Show’ were distributed all over the school community inviting members to bring in their pennies.  The overarching theme of the day was “If you can believe it, you can achieve it”-showcasing to the school community that anything is possible when everyone works together.

The auditorium filled with hundreds of students and faculty pounding on the floor as Penny Harvest Coach Mary Bowden invited everyone to follow the rhythmic beat of music playing in the background.  As students and faculty clapped in unison, Mary shouted out the names of classes and individual students who had contributed the most pennies during the collection campaign.  To inspire others to contribute their pennies, those recognized were encouraged to “stand up and clap your hands”.

Following the recognition ceremony, students came up with a unique way to introduce the Penny Harvest program to their peers.  An introductory skit of the Penny Harvest detailed the history of the Penny Harvest with father and daughter founders Teddy and Nora Gross played by two PS/MS 3 students. During the closing ceremony, eager to motivate their peers to support the community, student leaders reflected on their own personal experiences as leaders of the Penny Harvest.

The excitement, unity and talent pouring from the PS/MS 3 Penny Harvest Show carried over to PS/MS 3’s gathering pennies phase.  In the end, the school community collected over $1,000 to support St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.
