 Attend or host a check presentation ceremony

After students have made their grant decisions, many schools host check presentation ceremonies where they present their grantee(s) with checks. You can present a certificate to every student and speak about how the money will be used. This is a great time for a constituent to speak about the value of the grant. There are many reasons to take part:

• Use this as an opportunity to educate the entire student body about your issue.
• Consider the school as a community center where you can also reach teachers and parents. Bring extra information about your organization anticipating their interest.
• Take pictures for your newsletter or website.
• Work with the Penny Harvest Coach to issue a press release and get media attention.

Send schools a “Thank You” note

Address it to the Penny Harvest Coach and the Penny Harvest student leaders. Students love getting mail, and a “Thank You” note can be a great way to spark a lasting relationship with the school. Students and teachers share these notes with the entire school community. Things to consider:

• Write in a different voice than regular thank you notes. Congratulate students on being philanthropists and activists and explain exactly what the money will be used for.
• Include a picture of the students if you’ve taken one or a favorite from your organization.
• Include certificates. Some organizations coordinate with the Coach to get the name of each student to personalize each certificate.
• Have several people in your organization sign the note. Students will feel proud that so many people have heard about their grant.

Tell the entire community about your partnership

You have the power to change attitudes towards children by telling your story – there’s no better way to appreciate them than that! Feature the grant in your newsletter or on your website and be sure to alert the school, as Red Nose Response did.

Common Cents can also recognize the grant on our website or in our e-newsletter. For example, we worked with The New York Says Thank You Foundation to highlight the generosity of students at PS 27 in Brooklyn.
