Sustaining Momentum and finishing strong!

Over the next few weeks, your school will be busy completing the Gather Pennies phase of the Penny Harvest.

Student leaders will excite their peers for one last hurrah of penny collecting and help you consolidate pennies before they are taken to your local banking partner.

Go to the Curriculum Section for tips on finishing strong.

Penny Harvest Report

Remember to download and complete the Penny Harvest Evaluation Report: Gather Pennies.  Reports are due January 7, 2009.

These reports provide us with the much needed feedback from the very person implementing our program- you!

Getting Your Coins Counted

  1. Talk to your bank about the best way to deposit the coins (rolled, separate out bills, etc.).
  2. Consolidate your harvest by filling canvas sacks to the 30 lb line (1/2 way) and securing tightly with a rubber band.
  3. Make parking and cart arrangements (to carry those heavy 30 lb sacks into the bank) ahead of time to make this as smooth as can be.
  4. Before giving the sacks to the bank, note on the Penny Harvest receipt the number of total sacks and value of the cash and checks you are sending to Common Cents. Keep a copy of the receipt and mail or fax one back to Common Cents. F: (212) 579-3488.  Download the Penny Harvest receipt.
  5. Get your Penny Harvest Leaders, staff and other supportive adults to help!

If you have any questions about this process, please call Kylie Gursky at (212) 579-0579.

Think you will fall short of the 25 Sack Challenge?

A limited number of scholarship Philanthropy Roundtables are available to schools that harvest less than 25 sacks. Your students will still have the opportunity to make grants and take action with their hard-earned pennies. Please contact Kylie Gursky at (212) 579-0579 as soon as possible if you think your school will not beat the 25 Sack Challenge.

Look Ahead to the Philanthropy Roundtable

Beginning in January, students will make grants and take action as they decide how to best allocate their Penny Harvest funds to organizations and service projects of their choice.

A Philanthropy Roundtable Professional Development web-conference will take place on January 14, 2009. The web-conferencing session will take approximately two hours and prepare you to guide your students through this exciting decision making process.

Now is a good time to share information with your principal about the next phase of the Penny Harvest: Make Grants.  Download this letter with information about the Philanthropy Roundtable.

Download the 08/09 Penny Harvest Supplemental Guide for Educators with information including deadlines, forms and curriculum reminders.
