This year, New York 1 News chose Common Cents as the winner of the New Yorker of the Year award. Common Cents was selected for the honor because of its longstanding commitment to New York City youth, and the work done through the Penny Harvest to teach elementary and middle school students the value of giving back and good citizenship. Common Cents is thrilled at this honor and shares the award with the 830 New York City schools—the principals, teachers, students and their families—that use the Penny Harvest to strengthen their communities, year after year. As part of the feature, NY1 interviewed New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is a supporter of Common Cents. Bloomberg stressed the importance of introducing children to the art of giving."[The Penny Harvest] is training people to be philanthropists, to make them understand that they have a responsibility that if they're lucky to have something to share it with people who aren't lucky enough, and haven't been dealt as good a hand," said the mayor. "So out of these kids who are giving pennies, someday they'll be the next Warren Buffet and Bill Gates." Veteran Penny Harvest Coach Cleo Jarvis from P.S. 335 in Brooklyn who was also interviewed for the piece, says that getting the students involved with the Penny Harvest is an invaluable experience. "It's imperative that we as adults show by example," said Jarvis. "We need to show these children how to live in peace and love and joy, and how to give back to their community." Throughout the year, NY1 selects an individual or organization that gives back to the NYC community for their New Yorker of the Week series. The New Yorker of the Year is the culminating honor of this series and is highlighted in NY1’s special “Best of New York” each December. The segment featuring Common Cents first aired on December 28, 2007. Past New Yorker of the Year winners include Wynton Marsalis for establishing Jazz at Lincoln Center and creating a permanent home for jazz in the city, and Thomas R. Frieden, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health. |
