COMMON CENTS ANNOUNCES 2009/2010 SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE

July 1, 2010

Penny Harvest schools in New York City work hard every year to bring philanthropy and service to their schools and communities. Some schools go above and beyond this duty— their actions and innovations lead to fresh ideas, lesson plans, and harvesting and teaching strategies, many of which may later become standard Penny Harvest practice, adopted into our core curriculum. These leaders are Penny Harvest Schools of Excellence.

Any school may apply to be a School of Excellence. The school’s Penny Harvest coach must submit a detailed application chronicling their Penny Harvest, their students’ growth, examples of at least one innovative practice as well as their own reflections of the year. Though there are guidelines for the information that must be included, there is plenty of room for added creativity. Applications range from hand-written testimonies and giant hand-crafted storybooks, to Powerpoint slideshows and YouTube videos.

Application review is rigorous. The entire Common Cents staff participates in the process, judging applications on Penny Harvest practices, strategy and innovation, student leader reflection, and the core components of the Penny Harvest: whole school involvement, student leadership, community participation and curriculum integration. The leading schools receive the Penny Harvest’s top award: School of Excellence Highest Honors. Other schools may receive First Honors, or School of Excellence.

All Schools of Excellence get their own profile page on the Common Cents website documenting their achievements. This year’s SOE profiles will be available later this summer. Click here to view previous Schools of Excellence profiles.
