19TH ANNUAL PENNY HARVEST KICKS-OFF

October 25, 2010

Starting this week, students at a thousand schools nationwide - nearly 500,000 students total - began scouring their homes and neighborhoods for idle pennies as part of the 19th Annual Penny Harvest. From now until Thanksgiving, Penny Harvesters will go door-to-door with their families asking neighbors to help them better their communities by donating spare change.

During the next four weeks, Penny Harvesters will collect millions of pennies as thousands of them connect with their communities. As they participate in the first of four phases of the Penny Harvest, these students will literally create their own philanthropic bank accounts at each of their schools. One hundred percent of the funds collected will be used to make grants to non-profit organizations of their choice and to fund service-learning projects in their community.

Since 1991, Common Cents has worked hand-in-hand with schools rallying students to make a difference in their neighborhoods. Last year alone, Penny Harvesters collected and gave away $756,273.19, made 2,278 grants to community-based organizations, and completed 355 Neighborhood Service Projects.

In New York alone, almost 400 educators came together earlier this month for eight city-wide Penny Harvest professional development sessions held by Common Cents to learn about the program, discuss Penny Harvest plans for the upcoming year, and share stories, strategies and lessons from their schools. These “Penny Harvest Coaches” will take their knowledge back into their schools to induct their students into a year of service-learning and community service.

Here’s how you can support Penny Harvesters in your neighborhood!

  1. Save your pennies in case a Penny Harvester comes knocking on your door or check out a list of the schools that participate in the Penny Harvest by using the Penny Harvest Report tool on our website and drop off your pennies.
  2. Don't live near a Penny Harvesting school? Find out how to enroll your local school in the program.
  3. Make a donation to Common Cents today to help us continue to provide this service learning program to schools at no cost.

The Penny Harvest is a national program, run in the Capital Region of NY; Colorado; Florida; New York City/Metro NY; Ohio; Seattle, WA; as well as individual schools across the country. Common Cents is proud to acknowledge our 2010/2011 partners who help bring the Penny Harvest to their communities:
