SCHOOL SUPPORT INTERN

Location:                        New York City
Job description:              See details below
Reports to:                     Program Associate and Common Cents Fellow
Last day to apply:           When positions are filled
Duration:                        January - May 2010

“Having the diversity of responsibilities in so many areas is a unique opportunity you couldn’t anywhere. It definitely redefines what an intern is. It’s what an internship should be: you learn and you grow.”
-Former Penny Harvest School Support Intern, 2007

Have you ever felt dwarfed by the magnitude of the world’s social issues?  Do you believe youth can make a difference? Do you care about reforming the education system? Do you want a meaningful opportunity to connect your classroom learning to the work of an innovative, prestigious, and growing non-profit?

At Common Cents Penny Harvest, we believe in the capacity of young people to make a positive difference in their community.  Join us to help over 800NYC schools make this come to life as part of the Penny Harvest.  The Penny Harvest is an educational service-learning program that involves young people aged 4 – 14 years in their community and, in turn, builds the skills for democratic citizenship. In the fall, students gather pennies by the ton and then research community needs and solutions that they can contribute to by making cash grants and doing service projects of their choice!

You, too, can make a real difference in your community.   Each year, Common Cents hires a group of School Support Interns to support a diverse corps of NYC public schools that implement the Penny Harvest program for a paid academic-year internship. Interns spend a large percentage of their time in public schools and hold weekly office hours to support the day-to-day running of the program and organization. Interns are provided with ongoing professional development to support their responsibilities, educational enrichment and opportunities to build life-long skills.

Commitment: Approximately 10 hours a week during the academic year.  Semester internships possible, though year-long candidates are preferred.

Qualifications:  We are seeking highly motivated, capable interns who are interested in helping NYC school children.  Undergraduate students of all majors encouraged to apply.  A greater emphasis will be placed on prior experience working with youth, responsibility and reliability for students pursuing a major other than education.

Compensation:  Interns are paid between $750, contingent upon completion of the program.

To apply:  Submit resume along with application (including personal statement detailed in application) via email or mail to interns@commoncents.org or 570 Columbus Ave NY, NY 10024.   Applications will be accepted until positions are filled.  Qualified candidates will be contacted for interview.

Download the application in PDF.

Common Cents New York, Inc. is an affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.
